DIY Bird Feeder

DIY Bird Feeder

Here’s another Pinterest Project I recently completed! Isn’t it just the cutest bird feeder? I love it and so does Noah. Here is a link to the original tutorial, DIY Bird Feeder by Erin’s Creative Energy,  but I have included some extra explanations for a few of the steps that I had a little trouble with.

Supplies – I got my bowl and plate from the grocery store (Publix) on the paper products isle. Target has really cute cheap plates and bowls too right now!

I used a 1/2″ Carriage Bolt and bought this group of nuts and washers to go with it. I REALLY wish I had found an Eye Bolt though. I should have asked someone for help at Home Depot.

This is the adhesive I used. There were many choices I just found one that worked on plastic and labeled for outdoor use.

The bowl was pretty easy to drill and didn’t require any support beneath it. Just go slow and DO NOT blow air into the bowl to get rid of the shavings, it WILL come right back in your face/eyes. I mean, I assume it would, I didn’t do that or anything…..

Because the bolt is threaded you will need to spin/rotate the bowl to get it on and keep from cracking it.

The glue needed at least 2 hours to set and I couldn’t set it down or it would be crooked. So I clipped it with a hanger and hung it in the laundry room! As you can see I also do this with Noah’s paintings 🙂

You HAVE to put something under to plate or it will crack. I did not have a small block of wood so I tried it without and I cracked a plate.

I did, however, have small cardboard books from Chick-Fil-A! They worked perfectly and Noah couldn’t care less that there are small holes in them.

A little bit of chipping is normal, just no cracks.

My last step was to paint the bolt. I even did it while it was hanging outside! This was not included in the original tutorial, but I had the paint and figured it would look cute!

For the record, I sucked at working with the rope for the top, which is why you don’t see any pictures of it. I made the mistake of buying very thin nylon rope and that made it impossible to braid. I have since bought some thicker, blue rope and am going to try it again.

I hope you guys get a chance to make this! I love it and Noah is so excited for birds to come eat out of the beed firder as he calls it. I thought I would include this cute video of him demanding that the birds come back and eat the bird food! I’m pretty sure we won’t have any birds around for a while now. LOL
