Let’s Talk About Crap…..

Yup, it’s finally happened. I am singin’ about poop. It’s sad, I know. Salt N’ Pepa would be appalled.

I noticed when I was checking my google stats, as we obsessive bloggers are want to do, and someone had searched “holding poop suppositories.” That poor mom. She spent 2 and a half minutes on the site. I feel for her. Hell, I’ve been her. Scouring the internet for some sort of solution to the fact that my kid won’t poop! Not “can’t” poop, but WON’T poop. Do you have any idea how frustrating that is!?

So I thought I would share an update. And it’s a positive update too!

With the help of the almighty internet I have been working on getting Noah to poop. We reached an all time low over the holiday. Prior to this we had been using Miralax quite regularly which meant some pretty nasty diapers. But! We didn’t have the toddler who would spend half the day huddled over crying “No mommy, no. Bye bye” over and over again. Then life got busy and I got inconsistent with the Miralax, which made Noah hold it more. And then when we were out of town it got a million times worse.

He wasn’t pooping boulders or anuthing, but he was crying and trying to hold it everytime. And he was succeeding! Finally I knew that the only way to be able to spend the rest of our trip in peace was to go the suppository route. If I can just clean him out then he probably wouldn’t need to poop for a while and in the meantime I could get some miralax in his system. So Christmas Day Eric and I left his Nana’s house and stopped by CVS on the way home. Thank God they were open! I was pleasantly surprised to find that Pedia Lax has a whole range of products just for this case. I am going to list them here and explain how I am using them in Noah’s case.

I haven’t used this yet. I was using a mixture of Milk of Magnesia and Apple/Prune juice which basically did the same thing, but Noah HATED it. So if I have to do this again I’m using this instead. It works in about 12 hours so you are supposed to give it to them at bedtime and they should start pooping around the time they wake up the next morning. You can then give them another dose and they should have it ALL out by the end of that day. This way you don’t end up with lots of pooping interrupting their or your sleep.

This is what we bought Christmas day. I am so happy they had these. I’m pretty sure a suppository was NOT on Noah’s Christmas List. These are fast acting, approximately 30 minutes to 6 hours. They are watermelon flavored and he ate it no problem. I just told him it was candy. 🙂 Because Noah isn’t constipated it took less than 30 minutes. I just gave him a piece of “candy” and a full sippy cup of juice (as directed) and 10 -15 minutes later it started working! I’ve never been so happy to change a dirty diaper. And let me tell you he felt great! He was in a much better mood after getting all that mess out of him.

I have yet to use these on Noah, but I did use one of these suppositories on Bryce. For Noah I would use these ONLY in extreme circumstances. My theory is that Noah is not pooping due to the trauma of pooping hurting when he was constipated. Using a suppository would only further traumatize him and therefore be counter productive, right? Right. So these will stay in the drawer for now. However, these are the fastest acting. They literally work in a matter of minutes.

Pedia-Lax also has a children’s Enema product, but I don’t even want to think about that. Moving on!

All of these products, while great, only fix the symptoms. They are not solutions to the problem, nor are they meant to be used regularly. The Miralax however, can be used long term. I am hoping that in the next 2 – 4 months I will be able to wean him off of it. If not then our next step will be to see a behavioral therapist or a pediatric gastroenterologist.

Hope this helps some other poor soul out there who’s having to deal with this! Also, if you have ANYTHING to add please do! I am always looking for more information and/or another perspective.
