Mom and Toddler Pilates Doesn’t Work

This is why you don’t see Mommy and Toddler Pilates classes. :)

However! Bryce and I have recently started attending a Mom and Baby Pilates class by Oh Baby! Fitness. I am loving it!!! I originally signed up for the class to get rid of my baby belly and get my clothes to fit better. In the meantime I have learned quite a few things, allow me to share!

Most importantly the class we are taking is made for postpartum moms and this is crucial. All of the exercises are designed to be safe for our recovering bodies and to help strengthen our muscles and realign us. After carrying around all that weight in front it takes some time to readjust. I didn’t realize how much I needed it.The class also incorporates your baby! This is no small feat with my chunky monkey. He’s now weighing in at 18 lbs and 28 inches!!

One of the biggest problems I have had lately though is with my hips clicking and popping. They are constantly sore and if I’m not careful, putting on pants can be pretty painful. I knew that the hormone relaxin, which allows your hips to loosen and spread for birth, was causing my discomfort. What I didn’t realize was that it could take up to 12 months AFTER you quit breastfeeding for things to go back to “normal”. Well Duh! No wonder my hips are in such bad shape! I was pregnant with Noah and then breastfed for 9 months and 3 months later I was pregnant with Bryce! Luckily there are a number of exercises that we are doing to help me strengthen the muscles around my hips. I am already seeing improvement!

Another thing I have noticed recently is that my butt has completely disappeared!! Seriously, I didn’t have much to begin with, but now it’s non-existent! I also notice that even though I am skinnier than I  have been since we got married, I have a stomach pooching out and no butt. Not cool! The class focuses so much on our posture that I am noticing when I work on keeping my spine neutral my tummy disappears and my butt resurfaces! Woo Hoo!! A tummy tuck and a butt lift almost immediately! How’s that for an instant gratification workout! :)

If you are in the Atlanta area you should definitely check out an Oh Baby! Fitness class. I didn’t get a chance to check them out, but they also have pregnancy classes. This is not a sponsored post. I just wanted to share what we are up to. If you aren’t in Atlanta you should check out your area for a class! Or find a DVD!

  1. Do you have any suggestions as to where to find this dvd?? I have had similar issues with my hips bothering me, since baby was born. Thanks

    • I’m checking into it for you. I know one of the girls in class mentioned one. I will let you know after our class next week!

  2. Awesome post! :) I’ve never been brave enough to do Pilates with my toddler lol

  3. I have never been able to do the mommy and me classes! It’s like my kids hate working out… with me… or something like that. But in my fantasy, I do this every day with my newborn :) On the disappearing butt note, mine is GONE, like completely vanished with this pregnancy. I’m blaming my curved spine now.

    • Totally the curved spine! I was shocked, unfortunately mine is like a rubber band, it just snaps right back. I guess 2 kids in 2 years will do that to you! Thanks for stopping by!

  4. I love stretching with my 14-month-old – but even that can pose challenging at times. I’m looking forward to spring so we can go running together – well, I’ll run. She’ll ride along in her stroller. Love your blog! Visiting from SITS! :)

  7. We don’t have a baby fitness class out here, but I know all about babies and pilates – or dogs and pilates. Or either and yoga. Or either and just attempting to work out in your already tiny living room. Yeah . . . So, happy SITS day!! I love your blog and I can’t wait to read more!

  8. I find myself now just making lists of the things I’ll be able to do once the kids start school – there’s so much more than pilates! :) Stopping by from SITS.

    • I know! That’s why I’m trying to figure out how to exercise with babies. Their naps only overlap for such a short period of time that I don’t want to waste it working out. :)

  9. Stopping by from SITS! Congrats on your SITS Day! I hope it’s amazing! :)

That sounds like an awesome work-out place/program! I wish I’d known about that after I had my first 2! My 3rd is 2 1/2 and a little big for something like that, but I know she would’ve loved it! I think she’s a little too busy for the toddler pilates, but who knows? Maybe something to check out. We’ll see how motivated I can get. ;) For now, walks and the Wii Fit work! :D Not to mention mounds of laundry and housework! :D

I am a mom to 3 kids and have passed that season of motherhood, but certainly commiserate with all that mommies with young kids have to go through. (Found you on SITS, congrats on your SITS Day!)

  12. You really need the kind of toddler who’s going to cooperate. I have not yet met that toddler!

  13. hey lady! I hope you and Bryce are well. I had hoped you all would sign up again for the Mommy & Me Pilates….no sign ups so we postponed the class for a week. If there are no sign ups soon, they’ll cancel classes. Come on! Let’s rally up the troops! I don’t want the class to dissolve so soon after start up. Hope to see you and Bryce soon. It was great getting to know all of you!
