Wilton Decorating Classes @ Joann’s

I have been meaning to tell you about these classes I have been taking! A few months ago I signed up for the Decorating Basics course at Joann Fabric’s Store so that I could learn how to decorate cakes in general, but specifically to make Noah’s 1st birthday cake. Last night I completed my second course, Gum Paste and Fondant. Both classes were awesome and my teacher, Cathy David, was amazing. If you live in the Jacksonville area you should definitely take one of her classes, or if you are in need of a cake for an event she makes custom cakes as well. I’m considering doing that myself, but rather than jump head first into another crafting adventure I figured I would take it one step at a time. Let’s see how Noah’s birthday cake goes first and then I’ll let you know. 🙂

But, back to the courses. They are taught by Wilton certified instructors and they really are great. In the first course, Decorating Basics, I learned tips for baking a perfect cake as well as how to frost it, although I still need a lot of work on this, and different piping techniques. Here are a few pictures of what I learned in this course. Sorry for the quality, these were taken with my iPhone.

The second course, Gum Paste and Fondant, was just as awesome! I learned how to make flowers out of gum paste and how to cover a cake. I was very nervous covering my first cake, but as you can see it turned out great!!

I would definitely recommend these or any of the Wilton courses. I want to take more, but I’m pretty sure Eric will kill me if I keep signing up for evening things and leaving him to deal with bedtime duties all by himself. 🙂 I think I will sign up for the next cake pops class though since it’s a one day course!

**One thing to remember, there are quite a few supplies to purchase in addition to the cost of the class. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time and coupons to get all the things you need for the classes. Also, if you go to Joann’s on the 1st Saturday of the month they have a meet and greet for their classes where you can meet the instructors, and most of the time they have demonstrations. If you sign up while you are there you can get 50% off your class.

Happy Decorating!
